Sleep: The Missing Link in My Wellness Journey
Until a few years ago, I underestimated the power of sleep. Like many, I believed that exercise and a balanced diet were the ultimate keys to good health. I was diligent—showing up every day for my workouts, planning nourishing meals—but somehow, I wasn’t seeing the results I expected. Despite my best efforts, something was missing.
Eventually, I grew frustrated and gave up. I stopped exercising intentionally, even though I remained physically active. That break gave me the space to reflect. In that pause, I had a moment of clarity: I had completely overlooked the impact of sleep on my overall wellbeing.
Through introspection, I discovered that my poor sleep habits were affecting me more than Irealised—mentally, emotionally, physically, and even spiritually. Sleep, I learned, isn’t just about rest; it’s a critical component of our body’s healing and balancing system.
Inadequate sleep or chronic insomnia can manifest in countless ways: irritability, mood swings, lack of focus, reduced performance, weakened immunity, weight gain (as I experienced), burnout, and more. Without quality sleep, our bodies struggle to repair, our minds struggle to focus, and our spirits often feel depleted.
Today, I view sleep as essential—not optional. I’ve learned to prioritise winding down, just as much as I prioritise working out. Evening walks or gentle stretching help calm my mind. I avoid screens at least an hour before bed, skip coffee in the late afternoons, and keep my room cool and cozy. Comfortable cotton sleepwear and magnesium supplements have also supported my night time routine—but please consult your doctor before taking any supplements.
So here’s my reminder to you: don’t sleep on sleep! It’s not just rest—it’s restoration.
Until next time, be intentional. Prioritise rest. Your body, mind, and soul will thank you.
