Who We Are & What we do?
promotes and encourages the equal valuing of the female person in society
About TUWN
I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves.”
― Mary Wollstonecraft, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
The Unforgettable Women’s Network (TUWN) is a women’s organisation which promotes and encourages the equal valuing of the female person in society by developing women’s capacities through education, personal development and training. The main objective for which the organisation is established is to provide a network of proactive women who support each other and to be role models for others. This is achieved by providing advocacy, training and personal development to women of all ages and walks of life in Ireland.
Tuwn is a community group working at grassroots with the ethnic and racial minority populations in Ireland. It is a migrant led women’s organisation governed by a board of seven directors of women. They carry out their role on voluntary basis. TUWN has been in existence since 2003 and it is a registered organisation and also part of the South Dublin County PPN community group.
Focus: The focus of TUWN is for each woman to recognise and develop their gifts, talents and full potential; Empower women to overcome their challenges; Challenge and change the stereotypical and subservient positioning of women in society; to support and equip women to participate in nation building, Build networks of women supporting each other by sharing their skills, knowledge and experiences. TUWN has provided information sessions and events for the promotion of integration, anti-racism and addressing gender based violence. Some of TUWN’s best sessions have been providing support and capacity building for ethnic minority women. These sessions offer members and participants opportunities for learning together between indigenous Irish women and women of migrant background by drawing on our common challenges.
Our History
TUWN was founded by Dr Ebun Joseph as she observed that many women were being socialised into reproducing self-limiting patterns and that even when opportunities were presented, women were ‘programmed’ not to pursue or aim for such opportunities. We realised that the way society operates is biased towards unequally conditioning many women to reproduce certain stereotypical patterns, which appeared to be the norm and value of what it means to be categorised as the ‘good woman’. These conditions are deeply ingrained and they fuel gender inequality and often times keep women longer in abusive and unequal relationships. The mix of migration into the way women are positioned all over the world further exacerbates the marginalisation of women of migrant descent.
TUWN decided to take a two pronged-approach; one to actively advocate for change in the ways women’s contributions, values, labour and roles are addressed in society. Secondly to equip women themselves to question the taken-for-granted truths about what it means to be a woman, what they can do and achieve. TUWN actively empowers women to dare to dream and pursue those dreams. Where nothing is too big, too daunting or impossible because of their gender. TUWN operates on the belief that ‘Every woman is important’ and has a contribution to society. That the value of a woman is not the sum total of who she loves, gives birth to or serves. Rather, that each woman is valuable in herself, wether she is a mother, sister, worker or by herself. That we can see the value of women as she is without decreasing all the roles she takes in society.
That we can see her value and identity as a person and not her tasks or roles.
